ESPN GameDay Coming to Haas Pavilion
National Show to Visit Campus for Feb. 28 Cal-UCLA Men's Basketball Game

BERKELEY - ESPN's College GameDay and Saturday Primetime will make its Berkeley debut when the television road show comes to Haas Pavilion for the Feb. 28 Cal-UCLA men's basketball game.
The college basketball version of the popular College GameDay football series - featuring two one-hour shows at 8 a.m. and approximately 5 p.m. PT - will originate from Newell Court on campus before and after the Bears' final home game of the 2008-09 campaign.
Sponsored by State Farm, GameDay and Saturday Primetime return for a fifth season Jan. 17 and will run for eight consecutive weeks. The year will tip off in Chapel Hill, N.C., site of the ACC showdown between Miami and North Carolina. The program will make first-time stops at Cal, Notre Dame, Tennessee, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

Cal Band vs. MSU info!
Here's the scoop on the Cal Band for Saturday:
* Because of the ABC coverage, the Star Spangled Banner will probably be played after Big 'C' in the "C" formation.
* Pre-game is charted for 221 members. (Half-time is less, I forget the number.)
Half-Time:
* Show: The Who Show -- Who Are You, I Can't Explain, My Generation, Baba O'Reily, Pinball Wizard, Won't Get Fooled Again.
* The Michigan State Band will not be performing at half-time (and I don't believe they are coming at all). There will be parachuters after the Cal Band performance.
Cal Band Great!
As always, the Cal Band will perform it's Sproul Steps concert on Sproul Steps (duh) at around 3:30pm (1 1/2 hours before game time). Check it out!
The Cal Band has about 160 returning members with about 70 newmen. No one has gotten cut (yet?) as the newmen class is really strong and pre-game is charted for 221. :)

Cal’s overall concerns: Defend our domicile! (er, um, not a bad slogan for a T-Shirt!) Alternatively: prove yourselves! The team and the public wanted Kevin Riley to be the quarterback… here he is. Coaches say the defense will bring more pressure… here’s the chance!
Cal’s Offense: Attack!
Ø Michigan State lost three starters on the defensive line to graduation… sophomore running back Jahvid Best (4) finds good running lanes behind Cal’s offensive line.
Ø MSU will blitz an inexperienced quarterback with inexperienced receivers. Riley completes screen passes to Best and finds wide receivers on the run to defeat the strategy.
Ø The Spartans’ starting free safety was asked to leave the team last week for undisclosed "personal reasons." Open season on Jenrette’s replacement!
Cal’s Defense: PRESSURE THE QUARTERBACK!
Ø MSU lost 4 of 5 offensive linemen to graduation… the weakest part of the team now.
Ø The Spartans’ top player is senior running back Javon Ringer, one of the best backs in the country. Cal’s new defense (featuring three defensive linemen and four linebackers), must exploit the weak offensive line and stop Ringer. Stop the run, stop the Spartans.
OTHER GAMEDAY ISSUES
What on earth are we wearing? New togs for Cal football for 2008 (after last year’s mess, not a bad idea). The uniform incorporates aspects of the previous uniforms with new stream-lined patterns. They’re an acquired taste, unlike those highlighter uniforms…
Yeah, so, what about those awful highlighter uniforms? We haven't been to The Bowl That Shan't Be Named in 48 years. We're 5-0 in those uniforms. I hate them too, but until Cal actually loses whilst wearing them, they're the next best thing to hearing chainsaws on Gayley.
1/2-baked T-shirt? No, I'm not talking about those tye-died Cal Football shirts that Coach Tedford really didn't like back in the day. This year's official Game Day shirt is underwhelming. Every Game Counts is the motto for this year's team, but the home schedule is printed on the back. Guess that potential showdown in LA against $c is just for giggles?
stanfurd football “guarantee”: this is so stupid you can’t make it up. If you buy stanfurd season tickets and you don’t feel like you received the entertainment value of the ticket after the fourth home game (i.e., before you find out how much stanfurd really sucks at the $c game), return your $c ticket and ask for your money back. Let me help you out, losers. We don’t need four stanfurd home games to know that you suck!
So what’s going to happen Saturday? Why Cal could lose the game: Defensive line gets no pass rush, Cal gives up several turnovers, and Michigan State runs all over Cal’s supposedly improved defense. Why Cal could win the game: Riley manages a good game and doesn’t turn the ball over. Defensive pressure rattles a Spartans quarterback who threw four interceptions and fumbled the ball away during Michigan State’s bowl game. Michigan State is an average team in a weak conference with a second year coach, and is 14-26 on the road the past eight years. Cal hasn’t lost a home game to a non-$c or Oregon State opponent in the five years since the 2003 $c game (23-5 record). Riley engineers a long drive late in the fourth quarter to seal not only the win, but also the QB job for good. Cal 28, Michigan State 24.
COURT UPDATE: Judge Miller issued a tentative ruling on Thursday that she is inclined to grant Cal’s request to dissolve the injunction without a 7-day delay to allow the Oaks Folks to appeal. Cal stipulated to wait 48 hours for an appeal to be filed, and if one is, then to wait until the Court of Appeal decides the merits of a stay. Bottom line: if Cal wins at Monday’s Order to Show Cause hearing, the 7 day window + automatic 20-day stay is eliminated, judgment is entered on 8/25, the appeal is probably filed on 8/26, and then (I would think), the Court of Appeals decides on the stay within 20 calendar days (by 9/15), if not before. We’ll see!
Steven Harris ’93 just got back from his 20th High School Reunion… he feels older and more successful than he thought. He appreciates his family even more now and appreciates the Cal family that welcomed him with open arms so long ago! Speaking (writing?) about appreciation, please take a moment and appreciate and thank Sandy Barbour and the Athletic Department staff for all their hard work to support Cal’s traditions! She could have left a long time ago after the tree-sitters mess quagmired and tree sitter management wasn’t in her job description, so thanks very much Sandy! Soon to be 3-year-old Jeremy Harris says: My name is Jeremy and I am 2… Michigan State doesn’t have a clue! GO BEARS!

Despite having six players selected in the 2008 NFL Draft, the Golden Bears slipped to 7-6 during the 2007 campaign. In the midst of a thorough review of the program, Jeff Tedford picked up a book that Athletic Director Sandy Barbour had distributed to all of Cal's head coaches and senior staff members - "Talent Is Never Enough" by John C. Maxwell.
"I started reading it and I found myself highlighting half of pages, or full pages. It was so relevant to what our situation was," Tedford told the Contra Costa Times. "I felt like we needed to spend time on a lot of the things in the book and go back and redefine who we are."
The book focuses on 13 things which affect talent and allow a team to go beyond its talent: Belief, Passion, Initiative, Focus, Preparation, Practice, Perseverance, Courage, Teachability, Character, Relationships, Responsibility and Teamwork.
We're Men, We Won 40
The Bears have won 43 games over the past five seasons. It is the most victories by California over a five-year period since the 1948-1949-1950-1951-1952 teams combined to win 44 games.

The California football team will have a new look for the 2008 season. Head coach Jeff Tedford, the players and the staff worked with Nike to develop an overall new look, which incorporates aspects of the previous uniforms with new stream-lined patterns.

Arena Rock -- A Show dedicated to Hard Rock of the 1980s. We're hoping to chart the show such that each song faces a different direction and thus the 4 parts of the crowd. This would make it truly an "Arena" show. including Enter Sandman (Metallica), Panama (Van Halen), Dream On (Aerosmith), Sweet Child of Mine (Guns and Roses), You Shook Me All Night Long (AC/DC).

Hello Alumni! My name is Frankie Garland and I play the mellophone. I'm the Cal Band's Drum Major for this upcoming season and wanted to give you all an update on our planned halftime performances. We have a full, diverse schedule of shows and we look forward to performing them on the field. We hope you're around to see them this Fall!
Our 2008 Schedule is:
- August 30th, Michigan St:
The Who Show -- Finally a tribute to the true rock greats! including Who Are You, I Can't Explain, My Generation, Baba O'Reily, Pinball Wizard, Won't Get Fooled Again
- September 27th, Colorado State/High School Band Day:
The Hip Hop Show -- Something we figure the high school kids will enjoy. Its never too early to start recruiting! including Take You There (Sean Kingston), Deja Vu (Beyonce), Umbrella (Rhianna), Stronger (Kanye West), The Way I Are (Timbaland), 4 Minutes (Madonna and Justin Timberlake).
- October 4th, Arizona State/Alumni Band Day:
Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons -- Frankie Valli got his start around 1958. Brussels Tour? Eh Eh? including Big Girls Don't Cry, Walk Like A Man, Can't Take My Eyes Off of You, Oh What a Night
- October 25th, UCLA/Hall of Fame Day:
The Sports Show -- I like this show cause it breaks the mold of just choosing an artist and playing 5 of their songs. We're playing all the TV sports theme and hoping to incorporate some Cal Athletes and the Jumbo-Tron to show classic Cal Sports Moments.including Monday Night Football Theme, MLB on Fox Theme, NBA on NBC Theme, NFL on CBS Theme, NFL on Fox Theme
- November 1st, Oregon:
Arena Rock -- A Show dedicated to Hard Rock of the 1980s. We're hoping to chart the show such that each song faces a different direction and thus the 4 parts of the crowd. This would make it truly an "Arena" show. including Enter Sandman (Metallica), Panama (Van Halen), Dream On (Aerosmith), Sweet Child of Mine (Guns and Roses), You Shook Me All Night Long (AC/DC).
- November 8th, @U$C:

- November 22nd, Big Game:
90s Pop Show -- A show dedicated to the pop hits of our youth. including Backstreet Boys, Hanson, Spice Girls, Britney Spears and NSync.- December 6th, Washington: Disney Show -- A tribute to classic Disney Films including Circle of Life (Lion King), A Whole New World (Aladdin), Under the Sea (Little Mermaid), Be Our Guest (Beauty and the Beast), Be A Man (Mulan)
- Potential Bowl Game Show:
Bruce Springsteen -- We're trying to plan ahead for a bowl game show so that we don't end up scrapping a sloppy show together at the last minute.including Born in the U.S.A, Dancing in the Dark, Glory Days, Born to Run

Ex-Cal Kicker Tom Schneider
From ex-CAL kicker Tom Schneider (Tom is kicking well in practice for North Alabama and opens his first game as a kicker with them on Aug. 28):

The link is http://www.insidebayarea.com/calsports/ci_10219483?source=rss and here are a few key excerpts, "Former Cal football players Smits, Schneider team up on book...Cory Smits and Tom Schneider figured they'd make themselves useful. The former Cal quarterback and kicker missed all last season with injuries. While their teammates were taking reps at practice, Smits and Schneider were taking pictures. Smits had shoulder surgery before the season, and Schneider suggested that he spend the year chronicling the 2007 version of Cal football. Schneider then joined him on the sidelines after suffering a season-ending leg injury while warming up for the season-opener against Tennessee. The duo thought snapping photos would be a fun way to pass the time at practice while giving players some memories of the season. But after taking what Smits estimates was about 5,000 pictures, it turns out there were some pretty good ones.
The result: A coffee table book that just went on sale called "Inside the Huddle: A photographic journal of Cal football."
Schneider is still playing. Schneider used up all of his Division I-A eligibility but transferred to Division II North Alabama for this season....The book is currently only available at calinsidethehuddle.com, but Smits said he will have booths set up at the "FunZone" outside Memorial Stadium and on Bancroft Avenue during the day of home games. He's also hoping to get in on the shelves at some independent bookstores and at concession stands inside the stadium. The book features an inside look at different aspects of the Cal football program — practices, facilities, meetings, recruiting and, of course, games."

I can't believe it either! There's hope for Cal football after all! Per the Oakland Tribune's Jonathan Okanes about 90minutes ago, Coach Tedford said that Kevin Riley will start... but Nate Longshore will probably see action as well. This is a big, big opportunity.
Remember that the Pac-10 opener is in the second week, AT Washington State. Sure, WSU is going to be very weak this year, but it's still the Pac-10 opener, and Coach Tedford doesn't want to mess around with that important game, particularly a road matchup.
So what does this mean? I think it means that if Riley has a strong opener against Michigan State, then he's got the job. If Riley struggles, then Nate could easily win the job back. I'm just happy that Coach Tedford was open-minded enough to see past some extreme loyalty and select the QB who has the best potential to win. Longshore, God bless him, plateaued. Well worth the growing pains to see what Riley has for us.

The Golden Bears open the season Aug. 30 at home against the Spartans. "We feel like both of them have had great camps, but Kevin's going to take the first snaps and we'll see how it goes from there," Tedford said. "Nate will play in the game. I don't know exactly when, but Kevin will start." Riley saw action in four games last year as a redshirtfreshman, throwing for 563 yards and five touchdowns. In Riley's first career start last season, he tried to run with the ball in the final seconds instead of throwing it away, costing the Bears the chance at a game-tying field goal in a 31-28 loss to Oregon State. Cal would have been in position to move up to No. 1 in the poll with a win, but instead lost six of its final regular season games. Riley did excel in the Armed Forces Bowl for Cal, entering with a 21-0 deficit in the second quarter and leading the Bears to a 42-36 victory over Air Force. Riley was 16-for-19 for 269 yards and three touchdowns to earn MVP honors in the game. "I'm just getting ready for Michigan State," Riley said. "It's an honor to be named the starter, especially after what Nate's done at Cal. We're in good hands having two good quarterbacks here. I just have to prepare, watch film and get ready for this game." Longshore ranks fourth all-time at Cal in passing efficiency (133.1), sixth in passing touchdowns (62)and seventh in passing yardage (5,732).
